Title: Vice president and chief operating officer, Virtua Marlton, Virtua Berlin and Virtua's Emergency Medical Services

Biography: In this position, Long is responsible for delivering clinical and service excellence through efficient hospital operations, medical staff development and recruitment for 198-bed Virtua Marlton Hospital and 98-bed Virtua Berlin Hospital. Additionally, Long is responsible for Virtua’s Moblie Intensive Care Units and Air Ambulance program.
Long has lead the transformation of Virtua Marlton into a cutting edge hospital utilizing technology with specialty programs, including surgical spine care, joint replacement surgery and stroke care. Virtua Marlton provides emergent and elective angioplasty, an acute vascular emergency program and a chest pain center, certified by the Society of Chest Pain Centers. Virtua Berlin continues to build its high quality services for area seniors. This includes the Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit which brings the latest research and treatment techniques to geriatric medical care. In the ACE unit, elderly patients are cared for by a multi-disciplinary team all specially trained in geriatrics. Additionally, Virtua Berlin implemented a successful Wound Care Center that includes hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
Previously, Long was vice president of operations at Virtua Memorial. He also directed Virtua’s Operations Council which identifies and implements strategies to grow revenue, reduce costs and ensure an outstanding patient experience.
Long joined Virtua in 1999 as the assistant vice president of operations at Virtua Memorial. During this time, he directed a $20 million hospital expansion and renovation. This project included 26 new critical care unit beds, nine new operating rooms and equipment upgrades such as the addition of intensity modulated radiation therapy equipment (IMRT), bringing the latest technology for cancer treatment to the people of Burlington County.
Prior to joining Virtua, Long served as the director of social service and director of professional support services for Easton Hospital in Pennsylvania. A Temple University graduate with a master’s degree in social work, Long employed his skills and education by also working in child welfare, home health care and hospice.
Long is also connected to the community. He served as a trustee and board chair of Samaritan Hospice, was elected to two terms as a member of the Shamong Township School Board and served as a trustee of the Shamong Township Foundation for Educational Excellence. He lives in Shamong with his wife and son.
