Biography: From February 2001 to July 2002, before assuming the role of executive vice president for physician services, James Dwyer, DO, MBA, was vice president and chief operating officer at Virtua Memorial. There, Dr. Dwyer played an integral role in the $19.6-million expansion of Virtua Memorial's operating rooms and critical care unit.

In early 2004, he was appointed co-chair of the National Committee for Quality Health Care's (NCQHC) Performance Measurement Tools Task Force. Dr. Dwyer, who chaired the task force along with Richard Davis, executive director of The Center for Innovation at Johns Hopkins, examined policies and procedures that have helped the nation's top healthcare organizations achieve high quality standards. The task force created "The CEO's Survival Guide for Performance Improvement," assisting nationwide hospitals and health systems implement effective strategies for quality improvement.

Dr. Dwyer became a member of the Memorial Hospital Medical Staff in 1980 and has held several positions, including medical staff president from 1990 to 1992. He became Virtua Memorial's director of outcomes measurement and then vice president of medical affairs in 1992. With the creation of Virtua, he became vice president of physician relations and remained vice president of medical affairs at Virtua Memorial. Throughout his career, Dr. Dwyer continues to practice medicine as a rheumatologist. He has been named a top doctor by both The Guide to Top Doctors in America and South Jersey Magazine.

Dr. Dwyer graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He completed his fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In May 2006, Dr. Dwyer received an executive master in business administration from the Haub School of Business at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, and he delivered the commencement address on "Leadership in Business." He was inducted into Beta Sigma Gamma, the international business honors society.
