As Executive Vice President for Population Health Management, Michael S. Kotzen is responsible for the entire continuum of care process at Virtua, including hospitals, ambulatory, long term and sub-acute care.
Previously, he served as vice president and chief operating officer of Virtua Voorhees Hospital. His responsibilities included supporting Virtua's mission to provide a world-class patient experience through the operation of the hospital inpatient, outpatient and emergency services, and community outreach. Kotzen directed plans to expand the hospital's capabilities in the areas of women's and children's health, oncology and surgical services, as well as overseeing the construction of the current Virtua Voorhees Hospital, which opened in 2011.
Kotzen began his career at Virtua West Jersey Hospital Voorhees in 1992 as the assistant to the executive director, where he worked with project management to implement a system-wide information system and several construction projects.
In 1993, Kotzen became a financial analyst for West Jersey Hospital Voorhees and in 1995 was appointed director of contract services. In this position, Kotzen was responsible for management contracts and operations for service and support departments as well as for re-engineering, cost reductions and employee team-building projects. As director of contract services, Kotzen also worked to coordinate and develop all hospital construction projects.
In 1996, Kotzen was appointed assistant vice president of operations for Virtua West Jersey Hospitals Marlton and Voorhees. In this position, Kotzen achieved many significant accomplishments including the successful integration of the Diagnostic Radiology, Ultrasound, CT Scan, Nuclear Medicine and Angiography programs. Kotzen also managed multiple simultaneous construction projects including Emergency Department, ICU, Maternal Child Health and Operating Room expansion projects.
In 2001, Kotzen was appointed vice president and chief operating officer of Virtua West Jersey Hospital Berlin. In 2002, he was awarded the Early Career Healthcare Executives Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives for his leadership abilities as well as his commitment to healthcare and the South Jersey community.
In 2003, Kotzen's role as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer was expanded to include responsibility for Virtua's Mobile Intensive Care Unit and Ambulatory Services at the Virtua Camden campus. In 2005, Kotzen was recognized for exceptional leadership in NJ Biz Magazine's "Top Forty Under 40."
Kotzen obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Rutgers University School of Business. He earned a Master of Business Administration in healthcare administration from Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA. He has been certified as a healthcare executive by the American College of Healthcare Executives since 2002.
