Name: Richard P. Miller

Title: Chief Executive Officer, Virtua

Residence: Marlton, NJ

Biography: Richard P. Miller is CEO of Virtua, a non-profit, multi-hospital healthcare system offering a full continuum of acute, outpatient and long-term care. Headquartered in Marlton, New Jersey, Virtua was formed in 1998 by the merger of two health systems. Since then, Miller has led the system in innovative directions by creating a values-based culture defined by the "Star Initiative," adopting Six Sigma and other process improvement tools, partnering with industry leaders such as GE, and transforming a group of community-based hospitals into technologically advanced regional medical centers.

As a result, Virtua has become an international model for effective healthcare management and has served as host to domestic and international healthcare organizations that want to replicate Virtua's success. It has been honored twice with the New Jersey Governor's Award for Clinical Excellence and recognized with the Leadership Award for Outstanding Achievement by Voluntary Hospitals of America. For five consecutive years, Virtua has ranked as the #1 Best Employer in the Delaware Valley by its employees and the Philadelphia Business Journal (PBJ) and has been entered into the PBJ Hall of Fame. In a national survey of employees from over 500 healthcare institutions, Virtua was rated #1 in Patient Care, Employee Engagement and Employee Satisfaction for the second year in a row. Virtua is also a four-time recipient of the Consumer Choice Awards by National Research Corporation.

Creating innovative alliances has been a part of the Miller's success formula. In addition to an enterprise alliance with GE Healthcare, Virtua has formed clinical alliances with nationally renowned organizations such as the Fox Chase Cancer Center and The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). These alliances have enabled Virtua to create learning labs that provide its physicians and clinicians the ability to adopt the most advanced medical technology while providing opportunities for others to learn from their experience.

While developing and leading groundbreaking strategies, Miller stays close to the communities that Virtua serves. He is a board member of the March of Dimes of Southern New Jersey and served as past-chairman of the March of Dimes WalkAmerica Campaign. He is also a member of the American Heart Association board and he served as chairman of the Arthritis Association Walk for Southern New Jersey.

As an industry leader, Miller’s efforts were recognized nationally with appointments to the Leadership Advisory Council of the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Healthcare (CTH) and to the governing council of healthcare executives for the American Hospital Association. He served in a variety of officer positions on the Board of Trustees of the New Jersey Hospital Association culminating as chairman in 2008 and immediate past chairman in 2009. He is past chairman and lifetime member of Southern New Jersey Chamber of Commerce board. He has also been named among The 100 Most Powerful People in New Jersey Business by NJ BIZ.

Miller has received many awards and recognitions for his leadership and service to the community. Most recently he was named Voorhees Business Person of the Year by the Voorhees Breakfast Rotary Club for his accomplishments within the Voorhees business community. He was selected as CEO of the Year by the Philadelphia Business Journal as part of its 2011 Healthcare Innovation Awards. He received the 2010 New Jersey Business Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also received the "Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award" from the Boy Scouts of America. Miller has been named one of the 50 Most Powerful People in Health Care by NJ Biz and a "Person to Watch" by Philadelphia Magazine. He has also received national recognition as the Lean Six Sigma "CEO of the Year." He served on the Governor's Committee on Benchmarking for Quality and Efficiency, and on the NJ Healthcare Access Study Commission.

Miller is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves as a trustee of the National Quality Forum. A graduate of Mount St. Mary's College, he earned his MBA from Southern Illinois University.
