When it comes to radiation treatment for prostate cancer, precision matters. Calypso real-time tracking – known as GPS for the Body – is available in Southern New Jersey exclusively through Virtua Fox Chase Cancer Center Radiation Oncology. Calypso keeps the radiation focused to hit the tumor, not surrounding healthy tissue. In a recent clinical study, Calypso patients experienced significantly fewer side effects.

Why is real-time tumor tracking so important? 
Because normal bodily functions such as digestion and coughing cause organs to move, during radiation therapy, the prostate tumor can move in and out of the path of the radiation beam. When the tumor moves out of the path, healthy tissue receives the radiation, which may lead to the development of uncomfortable side effects such as bowel or rectal problems, urinary incontinence or irritation, and sexual dysfunction. At the same time, the tumor receives less radiation which may alter the effectiveness of the therapy.

How does the Calypso system work?
Three tiny Beacon® transponders – each the size of a grain of rice – are implanted in the prostate during a quick outpatient procedure. The Calypso System and the implanted Beacon transponders work together during each radiation session to communicate the exact location of your prostate tumor. If the tumor moves outside of the radiation beam, the therapist is immediately alerted and can stop the beam to adjust the patient’s position.

Tracking and hitting the tumor – without excess radiation
The Calypso System accurately and precisely tracks the position of targeted tissue in real-time by using radiofrequency waves. It is the only real-time technology for prostate radiation therapy that safeguards the patient against additional, unnecessary radiation.

Reduced side effects proven with Calypso
In the study “Assessing the Impact of Margin Reduction” (AIM), researchers compared the results from Calypso patients to a set of patients in a study previously published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In both groups, patients rated their quality of life before and after the completion of their prostate radiation therapy. The comparison demonstrated that the use of Calypso real-time tracking during high-dose external beam radiation therapy resulted in a significant reduction in serious treatment-related side effects.
