Those wishing to apply to the School must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 18 years of age prior to starting class and able to read and write English. Candidates must possess a current CPR certification and a current NJ, NY, or PA Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification. If the applicant is from a state other than those listed he or she should contact the NJ Department of Health Office of EMS at 609-633-7777 or NJ Office of EMS for information regarding reciprocity.
New Jersey regulation mandates paramedic students must obtain clinical sponsorship from an MICU program. The School of Paramedic Sciences accepts students with sponsorship from Virtua Health or Underwood Memorial Hospital. Students seeking sponsorship from Virtua can apply for it directly by contacting the School of Paramedic Sciences and must attend an interview with the Virtua MICU clinical staff prior to acceptance. Students seeking sponsorship from Underwood Memorial Hospital can contact 856-384-1000.
Once accepted, applicants are required to take a College Placement Test prior to starting class. An applicant would be exempt from this if he/she has taken the test within two years prior to starting class, has 30 or more college credits, or has a college degree. Documentation of these conditions must be provided prior to starting class.
Having prior basic life support experience is helpful, but is not required for Virtua sponsorship. It is required for Underwood Memorial Hospital sponsorship.
