Wellness at your feet and hands

When you have an ache or pain, the first thing you probably reach for is a couple of aspirin. But relief may be already at your hands or feet - even your face and ears - thanks to an alternative form of therapy called reflexology.

Reflexology isn't just a foot or hand massage. It's much more.

Reflexology involves stimulating various pressure points on the feet and hands that correlate - or have a direct path - to internal organs, muscles and structures of the body. Any part of the body that is sore or tense can be relaxed through precise reflexology techniques on the extremities.

"If a person comes in and suffers from chronic headaches, we can bring the body back in balance naturally through the practice of reflexology," says Donna Favilla, a certified massage therapist at vir tú spa. "We stimulate reflex points on the feet that correlate or mirror the head, sinus, and brain reflex points. The pressure techniques we use exhilarate the senses, relieve tension that is causing the pain and reinvigorate the body naturally."

A typical reflexology session lasts 25 or 50 minutes and includes:

  • Brief health history to identify what health-related issues to address
  • Sea salt scrub and hot towel application to the bare feet to exfoliate and soothe
  • Pinpoint and thumb techniques, called inchworming, on every part of the feet with varied forms of pressure to stimulate the various parts of the body
  • A final massage of the feet to bring about profound relaxation

Reflexology can help relieve symptoms related to:

  • Arthritis
  • Anxiety
  • Breathing and respiratory disorders
  • Chronic pain
  • Depression
  • Digestive problems
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Neurologic conditions
  • Recovery from illness or surgery
  • Stress
  • Sleep disorders
  • Skin problems
  • And much more
Favilla says individuals can learn to practice reflexology on themselves and others. Imagine experiencing a headache at work and being able to massage your hands to alleviate the tension.

"There are a variety of levels - from basic knowledge to expertise," she adds. "Classes and books are available that can be very helpful. It's a unique experience for everyone and not a cookie-cutter approach. Each individual responds differently to the stimulus. It's an exhilarating therapy that everyone should experience."
