Fibromyalgia

A-Z Index

  • Introduction

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition of the musculoskeletal system that causes fatigue, pain and muscle stiffness. Unlike osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, FMS does not affect joints and is not a result of inflammation. The pain occurs in the muscles and tissues throughout the body.

Individuals with FMS have an increased frequency of headaches, irritable bowel symptoms and sleep disturbance. According to the American College of Rheumatology, FMS affects about two percent of the adult population, mostly women of childbearing age.

Fibromylagia is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medications and rest as well as exercise and physical therapy. Many patients say they have experienced significant relief through warm water exercise, which increases circulation and helps relax muscles.

Virtua provides inpatient and outpatient arthritis services for individuals looking to relieve symptoms of fibromyalgia. The services include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Medical and surgical options, including minimally invasive surgery
  • Year-round community education program

Virtua's William G. Rohrer Center for HealthFitness offers innovative arthritis-related exercise programs, including the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program. This water-exercise program features a pool heated to 92 degrees Fahrenheit, complete with a chair lift into the water. The therapy pool offers fibromyalgia patients a soothing and safe environment to exercise and provides relief from common symptoms such as chronic fatigue, pain and stiffness.

For more information about the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics Program, call 1-888-VIRTUA-3 (1-888-847-8823).

Virtua offers several programs at the William G. Rohrer Center for Health Fitness in Voorhees, NJ, that provide relief to those who have arthritis-related conditions such as fibromyalgia. Programs and classes include:

A team approach

  • Primary care physicians
  • Cardiologists
  • Gastroenterologists
  • Ppulmonologists
  • Orthopedic physicians
  • Ophthalmologists
  • Endocrinologists
