Virtua's Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) includes 11 advanced life support units (ALS). It employs more than 165 full- and part-time paramedics. The team works alongside other community ambulances and rescue teams to provide quality pre-hospital life support.
The MICUs are dispatched on emergency calls which may be potentially life threatening such as unconscious patients, patients with chest pain or trouble breathing and serious motor vehicle accidents. The majority of the units are staffed 24-hours, seven days a week by two certified paramedics.
Virtua paramedics in theMICU even help to advance diagnosis before a patient arrives in the emergency department. EKGs are conducted in the ambulance and the results can be transmitted directly to the physician at the hospital.
