Pediatric Critical Care

A-Z Index

The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of the hospital takes care of sick children with the highest level of medical care. The PICU has the technology that allows intensive nursing care and monitoring things like heart rate, breathing and blood pressure.

A PICU is for children who are recovering from complex surgery or are seriously ill with conditions including:

  • Asthma
  • Breathing problems
  • Diabetic conditions
  • Infections
  • Seizure
  • Trauma

The PICU also allows medical staff to provide therapies that might not be available in other parts of the hospital. Some of these include breathing machines and certain medications.

Virtua has partnered with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to provide the area's best pediatric critical care physicians to the Marvin Samson Foundation Pediatrics and Pediatric ICU at Virtua Voorhees hospital. The team also includes pediatric nurses with specialized training in pediatric critical care, and child-life specialists who use age-appropriate activities with children and their families to alleviate the stress that hospitalization can cause.
