Pediatric Pulmonology

A-Z Index

Pulmonary medicine is a subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, conditions and abnormalities of the lungs and cardio-pulmonary system. The cardio-pulmonary consists of all the organs that help a person take in oxygen (breathe) and oxygenate the blood. Those organs include the:

  • Heart
  • Lungs
  • Blood vessels

Some pulmonary conditions are more prevalent in children including asthma and cystic fibrosis. Some symptoms of pulmonary disorders include:

  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Recurrent pneumonia
  • Wheezing
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty exercising

Families in South Jersey have access to Virtua pediatric pulmonologists who diagnose and treat infants, children and adolescents for a range of acute and chronic lung and airway disorders. Pediatric pulmonologists consult with allergy/immunologists, neonatologists and primary care providers to offer comprehensive management of lung or airway problems in children.

Virtua pulmonologists treat:

  • Asthma
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Chronic lung disease
  • Reparatory failure
  • Sleep disorders
  • Recurrent respiratory infections

To diagnose these disorders, Virtua provides the following services:

  • Pulmonary function tests for infants and children
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Sleep studies

In fact, Virtua has several SleepCare Centers that offer medical evaluation and a full range of diagnostic testing which includes sleep studies that monitor breathing and oxygen levels. Find out more about Virtua's SleepCare Centers.
