Minimally Invasive Surgery at Virtua
Robotic-assisted surgery is one of the latest options in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). MIS is a procedure where a surgeon inserts surgical instruments into the body through small incisions (usually 1 to 3 inches or less) and uses a miniature camera (laparoscope) to visualize the inside of the body.

An experienced, specially trained surgeon utilizes state-of-the-art robotic technology, called the da Vinci surgical system, to perform this type of surgery.
Unlike robots seen in futuristic movies, this robotic technology can’t be programmed to complete tasks or perform any type of surgery on its own. Rather, the surgeon manipulates robotic instruments with hand controls. These instruments interpret and refine the surgeon’s hand movements to provide remarkable precision and dexterity, and flexibility that goes beyond that of the human hand and wrist.
