Shoulder Arthroscopy (Shoulder Surgery)

A-Z Index

  • Overview

Shoulder arthroscopy is a type of surgery that uses a tiny camera inserted through a small incision to examine or repair the tissues inside or around the shoulder joint.

The surgeon makes a small incision near the shoulder joint and a small camera is inserted into the area. Unlike knee arthroscopy, most people are asleep during shoulder surgery.

Arthroscopy may be recommended for shoulder problems including:

  • A torn or damaged cartilage ring (labrum) or ligaments (in cases of shoulder instability)
  • A torn or damaged biceps tendon
  • A torn rotator cuff
  • A bone spur or inflammation around the rotator cuff
  • Stiffness of the shoulder
  • Inflammation or damaged lining of the joint
  • Arthritis of the end of the clavicle (acromioclavicular joint)

Virtua offers treatment options, including minimally invasive surgery. The advantages to minimally invasive surgery include:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Decreased pain after surgery
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Faster return to normal activities

For patients who need hospital care after surgery, there are floors dedicated to orthopedic patients at Virtua Marlton and Virtua Memorial. These units specialize in the care of orthopedic patients and are staffed by nurses with additional education in orthopedics. Physical therapy is also provided right on these orthopedic units.

Virtua offers a multi-disciplinary team led by your surgeon, supported by orthopedic nurses, case managers to help you make the transition from the hospital to home and physical therapists to help you get back on your feet.

Virtua's Sports Medicine Program offers comprehensive services for injury prevention, education, evaluation and advanced treatment of movement-related pain or injuries.

The program's three co-medical directors are board-certified orthopedic surgeons, fellowship-trained in sports medicine and specialize in the treatment and surgical management of sports medicine injuries. In addition, they treat activity-based pains and strains that keep patients from normal activities. Virtua's Sports Medicine Program specializes in injuries to the knee, elbow, shoulder, hand and ankle. A variety of treatments are offered including minimally invasive surgery.
