Virtua hosts renowned expert in breastfeeding
Virtua is hosting a program for healthcare professionals featuring Nils Bergman, MD, MPH, PhD, a world renowned expert in breastfeeding and perinatal neuroscience.
The program, "The Key to Success: Skin-to-Skin Mother Care," will take place 7:30 am to 5 pm, June 7 at the Barry Brown Health Education Center, located at 106 Carnie Boulevard, Voorhees.
The objectives of the program are to identify scientific evidence basis for skin-to-skin contact between mothers and babies; describe the neurobehavioral approach to breastfeeding and feeding frequency; and describe maternal perinatal behavior.
Dr. Bergman has pioneered the concept of skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby in stabilizing premature infants and has done extensive research in kangaroo mother care and its positive effects on the brain development and improved quality of the premature infant. His holistic view regards the skin-to-skin contact as the neurological pre-requisite to successful breastfeeding.
