Virtua Memorial nurse wins Daisy Award
Melissa Ferguson, RN, BSN (center in blue scrubs), first recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Virtua Memorial, celebrates with her co-workers at Virtua Memorial.
Melissa Ferguson, RN, BSN was surprised recently when she was honored on the Labor and Delivery Unit at Virtua Memorial as the first recipient of the prestigious DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Her patients and co-workers were not surprised, however, because Melissa’s nomination was the result of the excellent care and deep compassion she provides for her patients every day.
The DAISY Award was created to say thank you to nurses who deliver excellent and compassionate care to their patients. The award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who was cared for by many extraordinary nurses when he was ill. Healthcare facilities all over the country now participate in the award program.
DAISY Award nominees are nominated by their patients or patients’ families each month. Each winner is presented with the DAISY Award certificate and pin and a sculpture called “The Healer’s Touch” during a surprise ceremony on his/her nursing unit. Winners are also highlighted on the DAISY Foundation website.
Melissa was chosen because of the extraordinary compassion and care she gave during a difficult situation for a family of an ill child. She was nominated by the baby’s aunt who witnessed the comfort that Melissa was able to give the family.
“It was an amazing and humbling experience to be rewarded for doing what you consider to be your calling,” said Melissa. ”I always try to ‘Do unto others as you would have done unto you’. I treat my patients, especially those going through a traumatic experience, with the care and consideration I would want to be given to myself or one of my own family members.”
Congratulations to an amazing nurse on receiving a much-deserved award.
