Virtua named among "Most Wired" in the nation
Virtua’s excellence in technology earned official recognition as one of the 2014 Most Wired hospitals, a status achieved by only 375 of the nearly 6,000 registered hospitals in the country.
Information Technology (IT) at Virtua plays a part in every aspect of caring for patients to assure quality, safety and the highest level care. With Health Information Exchange (HIE) and various analytical and care-coordination technologies, Virtua is implementing the technological capabilities needed in the future as the healthcare industry is restructured to meet the emerging requirements of national health care reform.
“Virtua recognized the evolution of advanced technology as crucial to patient care and efficient operations, and made an early commitment to invest the funds necessary to establish a robust program,” said Virtua CEO Richard P. Miller. “We are honored to receive this award as recognition to Virtua’s commitment to patient quality, safety and access to care.”
To achieve the Most Wired designation Virtua had to meet specific requirement in each of four focus areas:
- Business and administrative management
- Clinical quality and safety (inpatient and outpatient)
- Clinical integration (ambulatory/physician/patient/community)
Virtua joins 67 percent of Most Wired hospitals that share critical patient information electronically with specialists and other care providers. Most Wired hospitals, those that meet the rigorous criteria across four operational categories, have made tremendous gains by using IT to reduce the likelihood of medical errors. Among Most Wired hospitals, 81 percent of medications are matched to the patient, nurse and order via bar code technology at the bedside. Sixty-nine percent of Most Wired hospitals use tools for analysis of clinical and administrative data to identify areas for improving the quality of care, simplifying workflows, offering a better overall experience for users and reducing the cost of care delivered.
The Most Wired designation is a key measurement that highlights the success of an Information Technology program. Through innovation and collaboration, Virtua has steadily built advanced technology and processes leading to comprehensive IT solutions based around quality, safety, and efficiency for Virtua patients and employees.
“As with any other successful project it is the highly technical and talented Virtua team members who make the strategies a success with willingness, leadership, and support for Virtua clinicians by providing leading technology efforts,” said Tom Gordon, Virtua CIO. “Without their skill and dedication, Virtua technology would not be where it is today.”
Most Wired is the second national recognition for Virtua which also achieved the Stage 6 designation of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Adoption Model™. This designation recognizes Virtua for its implementation of technology solutions that improve patient safety and quality of care. The significant projects and implementations that enabled Virtua to meet this designation included clinical, technical and operational programs to make the system work.
As the nation’s health care system transitions to more integrated and patient-centered care, hospitals are utilizing information technology to better connect providers, according to the 16th annual Health Care’s Most Wired Survey, conducted by Hospitals & Health Networks.
The 2014 Most Wired Survey covered the evolution of new models and payment from the IT perspective. As health care delivery moves to a value-based system, it will require more and better use of data analytics, care coordination and population health management.
