National Study: Community-based hospitals have better outcomes for colon cancer surgery
A national study published in the peer-reviewed journal, 2010 Archives of Surgery, shows that patients who have colon surgery in community-based hospitals, versus university hospitals, have better outcomes during their hospital stays. See the full test of the study.
Eytan Irwin, MD, Virtua section chief for colorectal surgery, talks about colorectal surgery at Virtua. “Here, the surgeon who performs the operation is the same one who cares for the patient before, during and after surgery. This is not the case everywhere.”
Virtua actually has more fellowship trained colorectal surgeons on our active staff than most university hospitals – 10 surgeons who have performed thousands of procedures, bringing vast knowledge to the patient. Find out more about the surgeons on Virtua’s colorectal panel.
