3,000 knees mark a Virtua Memorial milestone
Experience counts when you’re deciding which surgeon and surgical team should perform your minimally invasive knee replacement (MIS). At Virtua Memorial, a medical milestone was just reached as the Memorial orthopaedic surgical team just completed their 3,000th MIS total knee replacement procedure.
Joann Mieliwocki, RN, explains: "It's amazing that we have done this many procedures, but not surprising, since our surgical team works so efficiently together—like a— high tech machine."
Scott Schoifet, MD, director of Virtua's Joint Replacement Institute, couldn't agree more. "I have the best OR team going. Everyone knows their job flawlessly. I've worked alongside people like Joann for 10 years. It's a pleasure having such accomplished staff to work with, along with knowing we've helped so many patients get back on their feet and walking without pain."
The Memorial orthopaedic surgical team uses an MIS, quadriceps-sparing technique. This involves making a three to four inch incision, a technique that does not cut the quadriceps tendon, the largest tendon in the body.
Carol Childress, RN, assistant nurse manager and orthopaedic coordinator, says: "There are many puzzle pieces in scheduling a surgical procedure, including the availability of patients, staff, operating rooms, hospital beds and equipment. It's a balancing act that we have accomplished this 3,000 times and counting."
