Same-day total knee replacement reunion
Virtua is a leader in minimally-invasive same-day total knee replacements, and patients who have undergone this cutting-edge procedure are in a class by themselves. Dozens of these surgeries have been performed at Virtua, one of the few hospitals in the country to offer same-day knee replacements.
Patients gathered recently for a reunion to celebrate the successes of the program. The surgeons at Virtua -- including Scott Schoifet, MD, and Rajesh Jain, MD, both fellowship-trained reconstructive orthopaedic surgeons -- form a special relationship with their patients. They diagnose the patient pre-operatively, perform the surgery, and are responsible for all post-operative care, providing a continuum of care that patients don't often experience with their surgeons.
Same-day total knee surgery is full knee replacement. Instead of spending the night in the hospital, the patient goes home the same evening. Most patients are in their 50s and 60s and are active, so there is no reason to keep them overnight. Rehab starts before leaving the hospital, and therapists have them on their feet within hours after the procedure.
Orthopaedic care at Virtua is part of the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health at Virtua. Virtua's Total Joint Replacement Program was certified by the Joint Commission in 2006, one of the first in the country to receive the distinction.
