Virtua receives award from Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey
Last month, Virtua was awarded a check for over $172,000 by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (BCBSNJ). Virtua received the money for outstanding results associated with process and outcome quality indicators. This is the third year in a row that Virtua has received a monetary grant through Horizon's Hospital Recognition Program.
"An outstanding patient experience, clinical quality, and patient safety are Virtua's top priorities," says Richard P. Miller
, President and CEO. "Virtua was awarded this grant because our staff and physicians produce exceptional clinical quality while they deliver a high level of customer service."
Horizon BCBSNJ created the Hospital Recognition Program in 2006. It is designed to recognize area hospitals that excel in patient safety, clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Hospitals that demonstrate proficiency in these areas can receive financial and public recognition from Horizon. The criteria used by Horizon is based on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) process measures for heart attack, heart failure, community-acquired pneumonia, and the prevention of surgical site infections.
"This award will help Virtua participate in additional clinical benchmarking programs, purchase equipment and education materials," says Carol Mullin
, Vice President, Clinical Outcomes and Quality Management, Virtua. "Each dollar received will be invested into quality improvement and patient safety."
Last year, the award money was used to purchase additional Hospira IV pumps and a Perinatal Clinical Benchmark database. The money also expanded our ability to include all four hospitals in the American Heart Association's "Get with the Guidelines" database for Stroke Care. Additional money was allocated towards infection prevention materials. This year, the money has been targeted towards the purchase of atomic clocks for the four hospitals and additional material related to infection prevention.
