The ABZzzzzz of restful sleep
There are more than 100 different sleep disorders, and the effects range from minor annoyances to those that are life threatening. Most disorders can be treated with CPAP, a dental appliance, medications, counseling and/or changes in sleep habits and routines, but others may require surgery.
Frank Trudo, MD, board certified sleep specialist with Virtua Health's SleepCare Centers notes: "Sleep disorders can greatly interfere with peoples' lives, but diagnosis and treatment may help enhance and extend their lives."
How to get a good night's sleep:
Allen Salm, MD, chief of pulmonary medicine for Virtua West Jersey Hospitals and director of the soon-to-open SleepCare Center in Marlton, provides these tips for getting a good night's sleep:
- Avoid caffeine and caffeinated beverages (cola, tea) in the afternoon and evening
- Avoid alcohol as it becomes a stimulant when it breaks down
- Don't smoke; nicotine is a stimulant
- Beware of over-the-counter sleep medications; a consultation with a physician can help determine the most appropriate choice of sleep aids
- Perform light exercises in the late afternoon or early evening to help achieve more restful sleep
