The truth about diabetic wounds
Although diabetes treatment has come a long way, living with the disease has its challenges. Many people with diabetes suffer from poor circulation, a decreased immunity, and a lack of sensation of the foot known as neuropathy. These conditions make feet and other extremities susceptible to infection and, if left untreated, could lead to amputation.
"Early diagnosis and treatment helps prevent most diabetic wounds from becoming serious issues," said Paul Quintavalle, DPM, director of Virtua's wound healing center in Camden. "People with diabetes should perform a daily visual inspection of their feet paying particular attention to the area between the toes since this area is bacteria prone."
Specialists at Virtua Health's wound care center offer advanced diagnosis and treatment of diabetic wounds. They were among the first centers in the United States to use high-resolution ultrasound to assess wounds. They also use topical hyperbaric oxygen to aid in the healing process.
