Breastfeeding: Pumping at work
The reality is that most new mothers will return to work before they stop breastfeeding. Here are some tips to make it a good experience.
- Ask your employer to designate a place to pump that is practical, discrete and equipped with the necessary electrical outlets.
- Talk to your employer about educating co-workers about breastfeeding so they can become more sensitive to the issues.
- Schedule regular times to pump to avoid leakage or engorgement.
- Make your pumping area as relaxing as possible.
- Explore techniques that will trigger the "letdown reflex" that starts the flow of milk. For example, look at a picture of the baby or hold a piece of cloth that smells like him.
- Store a supply of milk. Breast milk, in properly sealed containers, can be stored for five to seven days in the refrigerator and three to six months in the freezer.
