Male Infertility: A common problem with many solutions
"Most people assume that infertility is essentially a female problem. But about half the time, it is related to the male. It's important that any man seeking help with infertility is evaluated by a qualified specialist," says
Mark Fallick, MD, Virtua urologist, and fellowship trained specialist in male infertility.
"First, I always take a detailed history: Has the man had a prior groin injury? Does he smoke? Is he taking medications like calcium channel blockers, which can inhibit fertility? Then I do a thorough physical exam and tests. Some problems like varicoceles or varicose veins around the testicles can cause infertility and are easily corrected with a minor surgical procedure. Even many long-term vasectomies can be reversed," explains Dr. Fallick.
"Other issues also come up. Some men ask: 'Does it make a difference whether I wear boxers or briefs?' I say — whatever you're comfortable with is fine with me," notes Dr. Fallick. "And making patients feel comfortable is my top priority."
