Should you still worry about toxic shock syndrome?
Although toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is rare, it's necessary to be aware of it. "TSS is a potentially fatal disease," explains Virtua gynecologist
Jeffrey Komins, MD. "It's an inflammatory response to toxins emitted by bacteria, such as staphylococci."
A well-known link to TSS is tampon use, and the risk rises with an increase in tampon absorbency. However, the FDA reports that tampons do not pose a health risk if used appropriately:
* Use a less absorbent variety if it's irritating or hard to remove.
* Change it at least every four to eight hours.
* Consider alternating between tampons and pads.
* Don't use tampons between periods.
