The art of massage therapy

With every touch, your body becomes more and more relaxed. And, as your mind drifts to a far away place, it's freed from the day's concerns. It's easy to see why massage is viewed as an indulgence, but the benefits extend far deeper within the body and the human psyche. As far back as 3000 BC, massage has been used as a way to enhance medical treatments. Why get a massage?

Why get a massage?
"Massage can reduce the anxiety and tension associated with certain diagnosis and treatments," says Jaime Pitner, MICP, RHC, Virtua's coordinator of holistic health services. "When your body and mind are relaxed, it's easier for the body to accept and tolerate treatment. It's particularly effective in easing pain before and after labor and in preparing for treatments such as those used for cancer." Massage is also an integral part of sports medicine, and its use dates back to 700 BC when Greek athletes used it to prepare for the Olympics. Today's athletes use it to increase circulation, relax tight muscles, and improve flexibility. Many athletes report that massage improves their overall performance by enhancing mental clarity, increasing awareness of the body, and raising energy levels. It's also a great stress buster. "Stress is recorded in the muscles," says Kathryn McEnerney, senior massage therapist at the William G. Rohrer Center for HealthFitness. "When people become stressed, they tighten their muscles and these areas tend to stay tight even after the anxiety has passed. Massage helps relieve tension from the muscles and the mind." Some people like strong strokes and others are more sensitive. Today's massage therapists weave a variety of styles and techniques to provide a custom experience. Swedish massage is the most common style. It incorporates long strokes, kneading and friction. Sports massages have become more popular as competitive sports intensify. This combines stretching with deep pressure and compression. Some people prefer a deep tissue massage using slow strokes and pressure. Talk to the massage therapist before making an appointment to decide on the right combination. Whether relieving sore muscles, preparing for surgery or simply trying to relax, Virtua Health provides full massage services through the William G. Rohrer Center for HealthFitness where the spa experience is melded with wellness.
