Cookies and candies and creampuffs, Oh my! Surviving the holiday food frenzy
Although many of us associate the holidays with food, the one gift you don't need to give yourself is a new larger wardrobe.
Barbara Darcy, RD, Virtua Health registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, recommends preparing for holiday events. "Although it may be difficult during this time of year, try to get extra exercise to fight off excess calories," explains Darcy. "And get plenty of rest. Tired people tend to eat more, especially sweet snacks."
If you are attending a party in the evening, Darcy suggests eating lean and healthy during the day. "While at the festivities, fill up on bulky foods such as fruits and vegetables," says Darcy. "Try to eat low-fat foods that are not fried. Avoid foods with a large amount of gravy, butter, dressing or cheese. If there's a dessert you can't live without, try splitting with someone. And never stand by the buffet."
