Sound advice on hearing aids
Imagine if everything you hear sounds like static on an AM radio. This is what it can be like for people with hearing loss. One way to improve hearing is with hearing aids.
Hearing aids receive sound through a microphone, and transmit it through a speaker directly into the ear. Though they have become very discreet, some people choose not to use hearing aids because they associate them with a disability or aging.
The latest devices
Virtua Health audiologist and licensed hearing aid dispenser, Nancy B. Musuras, MA, CCC-A, describes the latest devices: "Programmable hearing aids are adjusted using computers. An audiologist adjusts sound levels based on feedback from the patient."
"In contrast, digital hearing aids use special technology that automatically adapts sound volume to various environments. Although more expensive, digital hearing aids offer clearer sound with less distortion," explains Musuras. "Many are so small that they're barely noticeable in the ear."
