MICU SECTIONSAdministration
Administration is globally responsible for the EMS programs. This includes all aspects of ground and air ALS, ground BLS, dispatch, education, clinical competencies, personnel, vehicles and equipment.
Clinical
The Clinical section is responsible for the classroom and clinical education of paramedic candidates and has instituted an EMS education department to meet the needs of the continuing education requirements for the maintenance the EMT recertification. In addition to the courses leading to paramedic certification, Virtua (in conjunction with Camden County College and Rutgers University) has developed courses leading to an Associate's Degree in Applied Science from Camden County College and a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Studies from Rutgers University. For more information on these programs please see School of Paramedic Science.
Operations
Operations is responsible for the routine operations of MICU, including all vehicles and equipment, and coordination of special events and projects relevant to achieving and maintaining a high standard of emergency medical care to citizens of surrounding communities.
Operations supplements community EMS squads who have requested that Virtua provide basic life support. We currently provide EMS services for Barrington, Stratford, South Hampton Township, Mansfield Township, Pemberton Township and Maple Shade during the hours from 6 am to 6 pm. Operations ensures the smooth operations of our telemetry consoles located in MEDCOM within the Emergency Department at Virtua Voorhees. MEDCOM is staffed with EMT-D's who are responsible for all aspects of the operation and ensure a professional and consistent standard of radio communication at all times. Also, staffing MEDCOM is a registered nurse responsible for taking patient assessments from the field paramedics.
Research
Research studies specific clinical issues that have immediate impact upon patient care in the pre-hospital setting. In the short time that the Virtua MICU department has fielded research projects, two have been chosen for abstract and poster presentations at the national JEMS annual conference, one study has permanently changed a treatment pathway, one is performing groundbreaking work for the entire state concerning paralytics and the department was just chosen as one of only 22 sites selected by the American Heart Association for a national, five year comprehensive study.
