When Can I Enroll?

While open enrollment for 2015 is closed, you can still get health coverage when you go through a life-changing event such as getting married, having a baby, losing coverage, etc. Call Virtua at (855) 999-7759 to see if you qualify for enrollment.

I Do Not Currently Have Health Insurance

As of January 1, 2014, the law requires you to have health insurance. If you need to purchase health insurance through the federal exchange, it’s important to understand that:

  • You can no longer be denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions.
  • You may qualify for an exemption from obtaining healthcare insurance.
  • You may be exempt from carrying insurance.
  • Choosing the right plan can be confusing. Call Virtua’s FREE Health Insurance Counseling Service at (855) 999-7759 for assistance.
  • Not all insurance plans on the exchange include your preferred doctors, hospitals or other healthcare facilities.
  • Medicaid has been expanded for New Jersey residents. To find out if you are now eligible, call Virtua’s FREE Health Insurance Counseling Service at (855) 999-7759.

Health Insurance FAQs

What is healthcare reform and the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)?
The phrase "healthcare reform" refers to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that was signed into federal law in March 2010. The goal is to help more people access health insurance coverage and medical care.

Am I required to have health insurance?

Most people are required to have health insurance or face tax penalties. There are exceptions to this requirement for those with certain religious beliefs, Native American tribal members and those with incomes below a certain level.

What is the health insurance exchange?

The health insurance exchange is a federally-run program where you can purchase your own health insurance. The exchange, or marketplace, can be accessed at healthcare.gov or cuidadodesalud.gov.

Where else can I buy health insurance?
In addition to the health insurance exchange, you can also obtain insurance through your employer. You can also opt in to buy insurance directly from a commercial insurance company or through an insurance broker.

What do I need to do now?
If you currently get healthcare coverage through your employer or if you are self-employed and purchase your health insurance directly from the insurance company and you are happy with your coverage, there’s nothing for you to do. If you are unhappy with your current coverage, there are many plans available to you. You can change plans during open enrollment.

If you have Medicare, your coverage will likely remain the same. If you need more information, visit medicare.gov or call 800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227).

If you work for a company with 50+ employees and does not currently offer healthcare coverage, this may change in the next year. Contact your human resources department for more information.

If you currently live in New Jersey, do not have insurance and need to purchase insurance through the federal health insurance exchange, open enrollment begins November 15, 2014.

Whether you plan to purchase health insurance through the federal exchange or directly from an insurance company, call Virtua’s FREE Health Insurance Counseling Service at (855) 999-7759 to ensure you choose the right plan for your family.

I like going to Virtua, do I need to switch insurance plans?
Many changes are happening throughout the insurance industry. If you currently use Virtua’s services (doctors, labs, hospitals, imaging/radiology), you should check with your insurance company to be sure that Virtua is still included in your plan.

If I have a medical emergency, can I still come to Virtua?
Yes, emergency care is covered through all insurance plans.

If you have additional questions that are not outlined here in this FAQ, call Virtua’s FREE Health Insurance Counseling Service at (855) 999-7759. Our healthcare consultants are specially trained to answer your questions and help you get started.
