What is Remote Patient Monitoring?

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is a way for your health care providers to help you stay your healthiest, while you remain in the safety of your own home. Using telehealth technology, you and your clinician can communicate directly and regularly. In this time of COVID-19, it is ever more important to have new ways to “meet” quickly and safely, to track your health status and address any issues that may require an in-person visit.

Virtua Health is among a select number of health systems that offer RPM programs. We have advanced our programs in response to COVID-19, offering this option for:

  • Patients diagnosed or suspected to have COVID-19 who are treated in any of Virtua’s emergency rooms. Patients referred into this program (also called “EDRPM,” for emergency department RPM) are discharged home from the ED with a pulse oximeter device, instructions, and scheduled telehealth follow up visits. Patients benefit by avoiding hospitalization to recover in their own homes.
  • Patients with confirmed COVID-19 who have been hospitalized. Patients referred to this program (also called “IPRPM” for inpatient RPM) are released home with a health monitoring tools (like a pulse oximeter device), instructions, and prompts to answer daily health questionnaires and record their health vitals. In addition, Virtua’s RPM nursing team will schedule nursing video visits and clinician telehealth visits that occur over the two-week period after discharge. Patients benefit by returning home sooner, but with the needed support and observation of our care team.
