Interventional Cardiology

Our interventional cardiologists use advanced catheter-based treatments for blocked arteries, heart valve disorders, and more.

Cardiovascular problems, such as a blocked artery, diseased valve, or hole in your heart, can greatly impact your quality of life—and may even be life-threatening. Our nationally recognized interventional cardiologists perform the most advanced, minimally invasive procedures to treat your condition.

Our Approach to Interventional Cardiology

Our interventional cardiologists combine cutting-edge technology and compassionate care to deliver the best outcomes for you.

Every year, our teams perform thousands of procedures, from diagnostic catheterizations to angioplasty with stent placement to transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Nationally recognized for excellence in heart care, our interventional cardiologists perform the most complex procedures that may be turned down elsewhere.

Virtua Interventional Cardiology Providers

Based at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Virtua Marlton, and Virtua Mount Holly Hospitals, our interventional cardiologists provide pioneering treatments to improve your quality of life.

Heart and Blood Vessel Conditions We Treat

Conditions our interventional cardiologists treat include:

  • Angina, or chest pain, caused by narrowing of the arteries feeding the heart with blood.
  • Arrhythmias, abnormal heart rhythms in which your heart beats too quickly, too slowly, or irregularly.
  • Cardiogenic shock, which occurs when your heart suddenly can’t pump enough oxygen-rich blood to your body.
  • Cardiomyopathy, a weakening or enlargement of your heart.
  • Carotid artery disease, a narrowing or blockage in the arteries feeding your brain with oxygen-rich blood.
  • Congenital heart defects, heart conditions present at birth, including atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO).
  • Coronary artery disease, a narrowing of the arteries caused by the buildup of plaque.
  • Heart attack, which occurs when a clot or other blockage cuts off oxygen-rich blood to your heart.
  • Heart valve disorders, including aortic and mitral valve stenosis and regurgitation.
  • Myocarditis, inflammation of the heart.
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD)/peripheral vascular disease (PVD), narrowing or blockage of the blood vessels in your legs, including varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and venous insufficiency.
  • Pulmonary embolism, a blood clot in an artery in your lungs.

Interventional Cardiology Treatments

Treatments we provide include:

Coronary Artery Disease

  • Diagnostic catheterization: Looks at blood flow in your heart and blood vessels
  • Angioplasty with stent placement (percutaneous coronary intervention): Restores blood flow in blocked blood vessels
  • Atherectomy: A miniature drill, shockwave ultrasound, or laser removes plaque in an artery

Peripheral Artery Disease

  • Sclerotherapy
  • Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)/Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
  • Ambulatory microphlebectomy
  • Thrombectomy
  • Angioplasty and stenting
  • Atherectomy
  • Endarterectomy
  • Peripheral arterial bypass surgery

Structural Heart Disease

Complex, High-Risk PCI and Chronic Total Occlusion Intervention

  • “Hybrid” procedures: Interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons treat multiple blockages and conditions.

Cardiogenic Shock

  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO): An external device pumps and oxygenates your blood, allowing your heart and lungs to rest.
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump: A tiny balloon inserted into the aortic artery inflates and deflates to move blood coming from your heart.
  • Impella heart pump: A small pump implanted through a catheter into the left side of your heart draws oxygenated blood from the heart and pushes it out to the body.

Pulmonary Embolism

  • Mechanical thrombectomy: Inserted through a catheter, the FlowTriever uses suction to pull a clot out of a pulmonary artery in the lungs.
