How does Virtua keep patients safe? Through rigorous standards, continuous monitoring of clinical performance and training, and following best practices from the simple to the most technologically advanced procedures at all Virtua locations. Virtua has implemented hundreds of processes and technologies to keep patients safe… like two patient “identifiers” to make sure the right care is given to the right patient… or sophisticated electronic tracking to locate devices and equipment when they’re needed. Virtua's commitment to patient safety received an "A" rating from a nationally recognized non-profit organization.
Virtua earns straight “A”s
It’s invisible to patients but Virtua's behind-the-scenes efforts have earned all “A”s for protecting patients from medical errors, injuries and infections. That’s the independent assessment of the Leapfrog Group, a nationally recognized non-profit organization that rates hospitals’ performance for patient safety. Of the more than 2,500 hospitals in the nation, only 31% earned an “A” grade. And Virtua has four of them.
Combining high-tech with high-touch
Precise communication is a cornerstone of outstanding patient care, but can be challenging in the complex environment of a hospital. That’s why Virtua has refined the way we exchange patient information.
During a nursing shift change, patient report is conducted right at the bedside. The incoming nurse is updated with “eyes-on” the patient, and the patient is included in the discussion. Details are recorded in a sophisticated electronic medical record, ensuring that every patient’s medical “fingerprint” is accurately reported.
For communication at any time between clinical staff who can’t be in the same room, Virtua is currently developing secure texting for faster sharing of information.
New technology for advanced care
Some lifesaving technologies are still relatively unknown to consumers. “Capnography,” for example, is a new word to most people, but it protects patients every day at Virtua. Capnography monitors a patient’s breathing while on pain medication. It detects the slightest rise in carbon dioxide levels, giving the patient’s medical team an early indication of any changes in breathing.
Other cutting edge technology-based care at Virtua includes early lung cancer screening and the BARRx procedure to treat pre-cancerous lesions of the esophagus.
