Advanced Treatments for Faster Healing
Bladder cancer was diagnosed in more than 75,000 people in the U.S. in 2014. Men are about three times more likely than women to be diagnosed with the disease. However, in men or women, it occurs mainly in people over age 55. Early detection improves treatment success, and research continues to improve screening tests. The first warning sign of bladder cancer is blood in the urine. Because this also can be a sign of infection, kidney stones or other kidney disease, it’s best to have it checked promptly by your doctor.
Bladder cancers are classified (staged) by how deeply they invade into the bladder wall, which has several layers. Superficial bladder cancer is limited to the innermost linings of the bladder. Invasive bladder cancer penetrates the muscular layer of the bladder wall.
Types of bladder cancer include:
Transitional cell carcinoma
Originates in cells lining the inside of the bladder and is the most common form of bladder cancer, accounting for 97% of all cases.
Squamous cell carcinoma
This type of bladder cancer begins in thin, flat cells found on the surface of the skin.
Originates in cells that produce and release mucus and other fluids.
