Caring for Reproductive Health
Uterine cancer is the most common gynecologic cancer in postmenopausal women and is highly curable when diagnosed early. Uterine cancer occurs when abnormal malignant cells form in the uterus. And the two types of uterine cancer are:
- Endometrial cancer
The most common type of uterine cancer. It occurs in the inner lining of the uterus, called the endometrium. Women between the ages of 50 and 65 are most affected. Women are more likely to develop endometrial cancer when they have high levels of estrogen that are not offset by progesterone
- Uterine sarcoma
This type of cancer is rare, accounting for only 2% to 4% of all cancers of the uterus. It develops in the uterine muscle, the myometrium. While its cause is unknown, it occurs most often in middle-aged and elderly women. Those who have undergone pelvic radiation in treatment of other cancers may be more likely to develop this cancer
The Virtua Fox Chase Cancer Program offers skilled gynecologic oncology surgeons, and a range of diagnostic procedures, advanced treatment options, and personalized support services if you are diagnosed with uterine cancer. You’ll receive an individualized treatment plan based on the stage of the uterine cancer as well as your age, health and personal choices.
Our program offers advanced treatment options and palliative care services, including:
- Radiation therapies, such as high-dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy
This treatment is designed to provide a high dose of radiation to the cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissue.
- Minimally invasive surgery
Coordinated by teams of board-certified gynecologic oncologists and surgical specialists, this treatment helps speed recovery time.
