At Virtua Orthopedics & Spine, we know that a broken bone can be scary, debilitating, and incredibly painful. So when an injury occurs, our team works quickly to deliver compassionate, comprehensive care when you need it most.

Signs and Symptoms of a Broken Bone

Sometimes, it can be fairly easy to identify a broken bone. Please visit an emergency room or call 911 if you're experiencing:

  • An out-of-place limb or joint
  • Intense pain from an injured area
  • Swelling, bruising, or bleeding
  • Broken skin with bone protruding
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness
  • Limited or inability to move or put weight on a limb

If you're unsure whether you broke a bone—like in your ribcage or fingers— we strongly recommend visiting an emergency room or urgent care location. At Virtua, we can evaluate your injury and develop a treatment plan that will minimize additional damage.

Bone Fracture Treatment at Virtua

When it comes to treating broken bones, it all depends on the severity of your fracture. But here’s how fractures are typically treated:

  • Cast or splint: When you visit our emergency department, we'll apply a cast or splint to stabilize your limb, relieve pain, and allow the bone to heal. From there, we might connect you with a specialist for a follow-up appointment.
  • Surgery: For more severe and complex fractures, surgery may be necessary. At Virtua Orthopedics & Spine, our orthopedic surgeons mend thousands of bones each year.
  • Rehabilitation: Care doesn't end once the procedures are over. If needed, our physical therapists will create personalized plans to help build back strength and regain mobility once you're healed.
  • Subspecialty care: With Virtua, you'll have access to subspecialists devoted to individual parts of the body. This includes hand, wrist, and elbow pain, back and spine pain, hip pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, and sports medicine specialists
