Get the Facts about Zika Virus

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Zika is a disease caused by Zika virus that is spread to people primarily through the bite of a specific type of an infected mosquito. If a person is bitten by an infected mosquito, symptoms typically start to appear 2 to 7 days later.

About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika will get sick. The most common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Joint pain
  • Conjunctivitis (red eyes)

The illness is usually mild with symptoms that last for up to a week. Since Zika symptoms are so mild, many people might not realize they are infected.

If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, talk to your healthcare provider about your risks.
