Cancer Treatment and Services in South Jersey
Cancer begins when cells in the body start to grow abnormally, invade adjacent tissues and sometimes spread to other areas of the body. These are malignant properties of cancer and are different than benign tumors, which do not spread or “metastasize.” Oncology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer.
There are more than 100 types of cancer, affecting different parts of the body. Various types of cancer can behave differently and have their own causes, symptoms and methods of treatment. Prostate cancer and lung cancer, for example, are different, spreading at varying rates and responding to distinctive treatments.
According to the American Cancer Society, nearly half of all men and a little over one third of all women in the United States will develop cancer during their lifetime.
