Seek Early Treatment
All men, beginning at age 40, should undergo yearly screenings for prostate cancer. Screenings include digital rectal exams, which are used to feel for lumps or suspicious areas on the prostate, and, if your doctor recommends, a blood test called PSA (prostate-specific antigen), which measures cells made by the prostate that are often elevated when cancer is present.
Early diagnosis is essential to survive prostate cancer, which affects about one in six men in the United States. Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow in the prostate gland and create tumors. Most types of prostate cancer grow slowly and initially remain confined to the prostate gland, but others can be more aggressive and spread quickly to surrounding tissues. It can also spread throughout other areas of the body, such as the bones, lungs and liver.
The Virtua Cancer Program offers a range of diagnostic procedures, advanced treatment options and personalized support services for men diagnosed with prostate cancer. Patients receive individualized treatment plans based on the stage of the cancer as well as the person’s age, health and other personal choices.
Our prostate cancer treatment services in South Jersey offer the latest options available to treat prostate cancer, including sophisticated radiation treatments – such as Calypso tumor tracking, brachytherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) – to precisely target prostate tumors and minimize side effects. We also provide a full range of surgical options – such as nerve-sparing removal of the prostate and minimally invasive cryosurgery.
Other treatments include:
- Hormone therapy
This treatment includes administering hormones such as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) agonists & LHRH antagonist.
This is a surgery to remove or destroy part or all of the prostate gland.
A minimally invasive surgical procedure, this treatment uses extremely cold temperatures to freeze and destroy cancer cells.
The Virtua Cancer Program offers professional facilitated support and education programs, including the American Cancer Society’s Man to Man Prostate Cancer Support Group.
