Oliver Station
An Innovative Affordable-Housing Community with On-Site Health Care

The Michaels Organization and Virtua Health have collaborated to create a housing and health care community in the Whitman Park neighborhood of Camden. The vibrant campus – called Oliver Station – integrates beautiful, affordable senior (age 55+) housing with a Virtua primary-care practice on the ground floor.
Advancing Health and Housing Equity
Oliver Station is designed to improve the health and wellness of its residents by combining quality, affordable housing with on-site primary care. The medical practice also welcomes non-residents, serving as a vital resource for the broader Camden community. Affordable housing is vital to good health, research shows. Indeed, when people struggle to pay rent, they face financial and housing instability – as well as heightened risk for negative health outcomes. The community is less than a half-mile from Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, the health system’s hub for specialized care, including advanced cardiovascular and organ transplantation services.
Modern Dwellings
47 modern, one- and two-bedroom apartments with ample room to live, work, and play.
Community Amenities
including a spacious community room. fitness center, and laundry facilities.
Primary Care Suite
The office has 10 exam rooms and is staffed by physicians and other medical professionals from Virtua Health.
Transportation Accessibility
The community is adjacent to the PATCO commuter line’s Ferry Avenue Station, further enhancing its accessibility to the region.
Enhanced Primary Care at Oliver Station
Everyone needs a primary care provider to stay as healthy as possible. These dedicated professionals help keep you on track and prevent future issues. And they can identify problems early, when they’re easiest to treat.
Oliver Station’s primary care practice is staffed by internal medicine physicians, who have additional education in complex and chronic diseases. Moreover, the practice is a training site for medical residents (newly graduated doctors who are completing their required medical training). This academic model provides patients with a high level of care, as they receive attention from both a teaching doctor and a resident at each visit.
The practice also provides a full spectrum of related services to keep you well, including health literacy education, nutrition counseling, and other supports for the social factors that affect health.
Caring Partnership
Together, Virtua Health and The Michaels Organization are taking a non-traditional approach to making a difference in people’s lives.
Honoring Inspirational New Jersey Leaders
The name Oliver Station pays homage to the Reverend Thomas Clement Oliver (1818 -1900), a conductor on the Underground Railroad who briefly lived in Camden. He once presided over the Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal Church, Camden’s oldest African American institution and a refuge for freedom seekers, according to the State of New Jersey.

The name Oliver Station acquired a second meaning in August 2023, following the death of New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver. Elected in 2017 alongside Governor Phil Murphy, she previously served in the N.J. General Assembly for more than 15 years.
“Lieutenant Governor Oliver recognized the link between safe housing and sustainable health, and she advocated for those who encounter barriers to achieving both,” noted Victor Carstarphen, Mayor of the City of Camden. “We are grateful for the opportunity to pay tribute to her – and the Reverend Thomas Clement Oliver – with this beautiful addition to Camden’s Whitman Park neighborhood.”
