Fourth year psychiatry residents participate in a full year of outpatient psychiatry, located both in office-based environments and in community mental health programs.
Office-Based Practice
In the Department of Psychiatry’s suburban office in Mount Laurel, NJ, residents receive and build a robust caseload. They are responsible for initial psychiatric evaluations and longitudinal care in both designated psychopharmacology and psychotherapy clinics. The psychopharmacology clinics are directly supervised by attending physicians, and the psychotherapy sessions are indirectly supervised. Residents also participate in acute short term psychiatric treatments with direct clinical supervision at our Virtua Moorestown and Voorhees sites.
Outpatient Community Health
Each resident is assigned to one community mental health center for the year. On these rotations, residents are vital members of multidisciplinary teams that optimize patient care. Residents are exposed to a large variety of psychopathology in these clinics, and special emphasis is place on the treatment of underserved populations and persons who are severely and persistently mentally ill. On-site attendings provide supervision and teaching.
The program offers countless opportunities to increase medical knowledge and improve clinical skills. Structured didactic time is protected and provided weekly to residents at all levels and with varied formats, including lectures, discussions, and case conferences.
Clinical faculty and invited guest speakers present enriched material, and residents actively create and deliver presentations to their fellow residents as well as to residents of other programs. Residents are also strongly encouraged to attend and present at professional society/association conferences locally, regionally, and nationally.
Didactics focus not only on psychopathology and treatments, but also on practical life, career skills and mentoring.

What are the informal learning opportunities (i.e., bedside rounds, etc.)?
Bedside rounds, morning meetings/report, department meetings, behavioral health huddles, etc.
What programs exist for resident education (e.g., lectures, journal clubs, grand rounds, board review courses, etc.)?
Didactics, journal club, ground rounds
Are there opportunities to do “away” rotations?
Each resident can do one elective away per resident. The ability to do this will evolve as the residency evolves.
Is there a formal mentoring program for new residents, and do faculty serve as mentors?
There is a formal mentoring program, mentors are assigned at the beginning of the academic year.
Is there enough ancillary support to minimize "scut?"
There is no culture of “scut” at any of our primary hospitals. It is very important to Virtua that the system is education focused and not work focused.
Is there a possibility for research?
With the strengthening partnership with Rowan and the expansion of research initiatives at Virtua, more opportunities will avail themselves of residents being able to spend more time dedicated to research in the future.
Is moonlighting allowed?
Yes, moonlighting is currently allowed in PGY-3 and PGY-4 years.
The Virtua General Psychiatry Residency faculty and staff are here to help you reach your professional and academic goals as a resident. Be sure to visit their online profiles to learn more about them, their clinical interests, and more.
