Virtua Health - Food as Medicine Program
Research shows that healthy eating patterns and regular physical activity can help people achieve and maintain good health and reduce the risk of chronic disease throughout all stages of their lives. However, many people lack access to healthy food or knowledge about a healthy diet.
Virtua’s “food as medicine” program puts this research into action. Formerly known as the Virtua Food Pantry, the Eat Well Food Farmacy – with locations in Camden, NJ, and Mount Holly, NJ – offers enrolled patients nutrition education, social support resources, and access to free produce and nonperishable groceries.
The goal is to serve patients with dignity and respect while empowering them to manage their medical conditions through sustainable food-related behavior and lifestyle changes.
Program Features:
- A structured and comprehensive six-month program provided by a caring team of clinicians
- Nutrition education and “in the aisle” guidance on choosing healthy foods with a
registered dietitian - Individualized care planning for sustainable community- and social-need support
- Supplemental “shopping” in our pantry of fresh fruits and vegetables and staple
nonperishable goods
Eligible patients for the Food Farmacy program are referred through a Virtua-affiliated clinician. The program is targeted to patients 18 years or older who have been diagnosed with a diet-related chronic condition and experience food insecurity.
