Internal Medicine Residency

We appreciate your interest in our program!

Virtua is South Jersey’s largest health system, committed to the mission of helping people be well, get well, and stay well. As part of Virtua Health, our residency program offers diverse experiences and educational opportunities serving communities throughout the southern New Jersey region.

Program Information:
Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine residency program at Virtua Health.

Our newly accredited categorical Internal Medicine residency will be primarily based at Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital (VOLOL) in Camden, N.J., with some educational opportunities occurring in other Virtua inpatient and outpatient sites throughout the three years of training.

Although our program is new, Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital has provided education for resident physicians and students for nearly four decades, first from programs sponsored by Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and more recently from programs sponsored by a consortium of Rowan University SOM/Jefferson Health NJ/Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes. As a result, the attending physicians and staff at VOLOL have extensive experience in the support and training of medical residents. In addition, Virtua Health has been a stand-alone ACGME (American College of Graduate Medical Education) sponsoring institution for nearly 25 years and currently sponsors 10 residencies and fellowships.

The Virtua Lady of Lourdes campus is an excellent location to train medical residents given the wide-ranging services it provides to the region, from general medical/surgical care to high-level tertiary and quaternary care programs. VOLOL provides outstanding services in advanced cardiovascular care—including advanced heart failure care, complex cardiac interventions, and cardiac thoracic surgery.

Lourdes is also the home of complex surgery, oncologic care and management of acute/chronic liver and kidney disease, including liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation. Lourdes is currently the only medical facility in New Jersey that performs liver and combined kidney/pancreas transplantation and has some of the highest outcomes in the nation.

VOLOL is located just over the Ben Franklin Bridge from Philadelphia, Pa. It is part of the Virtua Health System which is the largest health system in South Jersey consisting of five hospitals located in Willingboro, Mount Holly, Marlton, Voorhees, and Camden, as well as the Virtua Medical Group with over 280 locations throughout the region. Virtua Health is an innovative health care provider with strategic affiliations throughout the Philadelphia/South Jersey region. It has a major affiliation with Penn Medicine for neuroscience, oncology, and pediatric care—including partnership in the only Proton Therapy Center in South Jersey opening in Spring 2023. Virtua serves a vast cross-section of highly diverse communities and also draws referral patients from across the tri-state region. The depth of our clinical programs coupled with the diversity of our patient population provides our residents with the classroom for intense, wide ranging learning experiences. Our residents will have the opportunity to learn Medicine where it is best experienced—at the bedside.

Virtua has affiliated with Rowan University Virtua to form the Virtua Health College of Medicine and LifeSciences of Rowan University. Rowan University is the fourth-fastest growing research institution among public doctoral universities—and our affiliation will provide residents with tremendous opportunities to be involved with unique educational opportunities and wide-ranging research projects involving highly experienced faculty.

We genuinely believe that our program is an excellent opportunity for our residents to not only learn the science and clinical skills to become an expert Internists but also to develop the professional behaviors to be collaborative and compassionate members of the health care team providing service to our communities and the region.

We welcome your interest in our program. We are accepting applications to the residency program through ERAS and look forward to meeting and learning more about you through the review process.
