Virtua's Cancer Screening Van Will Make Multiple Stops during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Beyond
Mobile Mammography Offers Convenience to South Jersey Residents, Free Screenings for the Uninsured
October 12, 2023 - It can be hard for women to get their annual mammogram. Whether they can’t take time away from work or family, lack transportation, or they’re uninsured and can’t afford the cost – many women go without this important test.
Virtua Health recently launched a specially designed, 40-foot truck to overcome these barriers to care. And this month – Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Virtua’s Mobile Health and Cancer Screening Unit will make multiple stops across South Jersey, so women can get their mammogram and other vital cancer screenings, all in one convenient visit. The program accepts most major insurance plans and provides free services to people without insurance.
Importantly, patients don’t need to bring a mammogram prescription. Virtua will provide the prescription during the patient’s mammogram appointment – saving them an extra trip to the doctor.
“We offer a great experience for patients on this new vehicle,” said Michelle Fisher, the unit’s advanced practice nurse. “It feels like you’re in a regular medical office, including the same state-of-the-art equipment and our caring Virtua staff. I’d encourage anyone who’s due for their annual mammogram to give us a call. Early detection saves lives!”
The Mobile Health and Cancer Screening Unit provides:
- 3D mammography
- Clinical breast exams
- Gynecologic exams
- Pap tests to detect cervical cancer
- Colorectal screening options via a take-home stool kit or colonoscopy referrals
- PSA tests (for men), a blood screening for prostate cancer (Note: available only to those who are uninsured)
Please see the vehicle’s schedule below for October and November, including separate stops for people without health insurance and for those with insurance. Appointments are required and can be scheduled using the phone numbers shown below. For more information, please visit Virtua.org/MobileScreening.
