Radiation Therapy for Cancer – Virtua Radiation Oncology

Your Optimal Result Tool

Radiation therapy is an important tool in cancer treatment, and Virtua Radiation Oncology is committed to providing the best possible range of options to ensure optimal results.

What that means for you is that the physicians and staff at Penn Medicine Virtua Radiation Oncology will develop an individualized radiation therapy plan based on the needs of your particular cancer case, and they will make sure you understand the intricacies of your diagnosis and treatment beforehand.

With convenient locations throughout South Jersey, you can receive the most advanced radiation therapy for cancer that:

  • Precisely targets cancer cells, while sparing normal tissue
  • Decreases treatment time
  • Is close to home

Each patient’s individualized cancer radiation treatment plan is reviewed during a weekly chart round session; attended by radiation oncology experts from Penn Medicine and Virtua to make sure that standard of care and best practices are met.

Advanced Technology for Planning and Treatment

All cancer treatment services are provided by board-certified and fellowship-trained radiation oncologists, medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, certified radiation therapists, oncology nurses and social workers.

  • Clinical trials offer the latest prevention and treatment studies approved by the National Cancer Institute.

  • A state-of-the-art computerized planning system is used to develop individualized radiation treatment plans that ensures the dosing thresholds for the tumor site and surrounding normal tissue.

  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is a treatment technique that allows doctors to conform a number of radiation beams to the target, delivering higher doses of radiation to the tumor while preserving healthy tissue. This technique also helps reduce treatment-related side effects.

  • Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) is an advanced form of IMRT treatments in which the radiation is delivered continuously as the treatment machine rotates around the patient. This results in a faster treatment time and significantly reduces the patients’ time on the treatment table. This technique is especially useful for head and neck and prostate cancers.

  • Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) uses advanced image matching technology to ensure the precise targeting and tracking of tumors during treatment delivery.

  • Computed Tomography (CT) Simulator is utilized by the physician to accurately locate the precise treatment (tumor) area.

  • 4-D Computed Tomography (CT) Simulator is one of the most important tools in cancer radiation treatment planning. 4DCT allows for the visualization of tumor motion, which is particularly beneficial in targeting tumors that move with respiration (for example, patients with lung cancer).

  • High-Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy is used for treating gynecological and breast cancers by delivering radiation directly into the tumor site, using multi-channel applicators.

  • Prostate Low Dose Rate (LDR) Brachytherapy are permanent radioactive seeds implanted directly into the prostate gland.

  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) allows physicians to deliver high doses of radiation to very small areas within the brain. This limits the amount of brain matter being irradiated, which decreases potential cognitive side effects.

  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) allows physicians to deliver high doses of radiation to very small areas within the body; such as the lung and spine.
