Conditions We Treat

Virtua’s colorectal surgeons are experts in the diagnosis and advanced treatment of colon and rectal conditions, including:

•  Colon, rectal, and anal cancers
•  Constipation
•  Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
•  Diverticulitis
•  Fecal incontinence and prolapse
•  Hemorrhoids, fissures, and fistulas
•  Polyps
•  Screening colonoscopies

Surgeons often use robotic surgical techniques to treat colorectal cancer, as well as pre-cancerous growths, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. This minimally invasive technology leads to less trauma to the body, less pain, and a faster recovery. Smaller incisions minimize the disruption of the abdominal wall and internal organs. Procedures may include colectomy or low anterior resection (LAR) to remove affected sections of the colon or rectum.

Enhanced Recovery

Virtua uses Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) methods to help patients bounce back faster after colorectal surgery. ERAS protocols used before and after surgery can shorten the length of time in the hospital and significantly minimize pain.

ERAS guidelines include:

•  Drinking carbohydrate fluids before surgery to prepare the body
•  Getting out of bed sooner after surgery to encourage the body to regain normal lung and bowel functions
•  Proactively managing pain with non-narcotic medications
