Take Comfort in Expertise
If you have a high-risk pregnancy, Virtua is here with the experience and expertise to guide you through this potentially stressful nine-month journey. Even for the healthiest moms and dads, problems can arise during gestation and birth. But with our state-of-art technology and highly skilled staff, many pregnancy concerns can be detected early so a treatment plan can begin as quickly as possible.
Factors for high-risk pregnancies include:
- Chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes
- Family history
- Pregnancies with multiples such as twins or triplets
- History of miscarriage or pre-term labor
About 75 percent of problems in pregnancy can be predicted from a patient's medical history and physical exam. In such cases, it's helpful for expectant parents to have experts on their team to help guide them through the possible ups and downs.
Virtua maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) doctors are obstetricians who specialize in caring for pregnant women who are at high risk due to having health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, being pregnant with multiples (twins, triplets), being over age 35 at due date, or having a family history of genetic disorders.
Our specialists work hand-in-hand with patients and their obstetricians to monitor health concerns and review prenatal tests and ultrasounds. These doctors also work together to care for women who need to be hospitalized during pregnancy. Virtua MFM specialists diagnose fetal abnormalities and provide information about the long-term outlook for children, while offering compassionate, family-centered support.
The program was awarded a three-year accreditation in the area of "obstetric ultrasound" from the American Institute of Ultrasound and Medicine (AIUM). The award is presented to practices which meet rigorous voluntary guidelines set by the diagnostic ultrasound profession.
Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital has a fully equipped Antenatal Consultation Unit offering diagnostic testing required during pregnancy. Our team provides individual instruction for expectant mothers who have diabetes, or other medical conditions that may prompt vigilance and special care during pregnancy.
Virtua Voorhees Hospital is designated as a Regional Perinatal Center, and Virtua Mount Holly Hospital and Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital are designated as Community Perinatal Centers Intermediate by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.
For newborns who need specialized care, Virtua offers a level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Virtua Voorhees Hospital, and level II special care nurseries (SCNs) at Virtua Mount Holly Hospital and Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden.
