Throughout your transplant journey, you'll be in close contact with your Virtua nurse coordinator.
During your wait on the transplant list, you'll undergo regular checkups, including blood tests. Please notify your coordinator of any major changes to your health, including hospitalizations and medication changes.
When a donor liver becomes available, the nurse coordinator will call you. It's important that you remain flexible and available to receive phone calls at all times.
What to Expect During Transplant Surgery
During your surgery, an incision is made in the upper abdomen. The diseased liver is removed and the new liver is carefully attached to your circulatory and digestive systems. The surgery typically takes several hours to complete.
You'll remain in the hospital for seven to 10 days as you recover from the surgery. You'll continue your recovery at home and may resume normal activities after about three months.
