Sensitive, Family-Centered Care

Virtua OB/GYNs are sensitive to the concerns and apprehensions of young women who are beginning to learn about reproductive health. We will help explain the changes happening to their bodies, how to stay healthy, and what to expect as they mature.

You should consider scheduling an initial gynecologic exam for your daughter before college unless she is having menstrual problems or has become sexually active, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

During a young woman’s first visit, the gynecologist will screen for menstrual and development issues, and address topics such as breast health, sexual activity, and birth control.

Should your child be sexually active, the doctor will also check for sexually transmitted infections. Pelvic exams are only recommended for a woman who is sexually active, age 21 or older, or who has a gynecologic problem. Virtua physicians also administer the vaccine that helps protect young women from the human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer.
