At the heart of Champions of Humanity lies a profound truth: health care is more than a service—it’s a human connection. It’s how we affirm that every life matters. And in this moment, when the distance between need and access remains so great, where life expectancy can vary widely between zip codes, we must ask: What will it take for us to truly care for one another?
We understand that health is deeply shaped by our environment. Nearly 80% of a person’s well-being depends not on medical treatment, but on the conditions in which they live, their access to healthy food, safe neighborhoods, education, and meaningful work. These are not abstract ideas. They are daily realities for countless people, and they are within our shared power to improve.
At Virtua Health, we’ve made it our mission to meet people where they are in their neighborhoods, in their experiences, and in their needs. Our Mobile Farmers Market delivers fresh, nutritious food to areas that lack access, creating spaces where community and wellness can grow side by side. Our pediatric mobile units and free cancer screenings help ensure that quality care reaches families regardless of their insurance status or transportation barriers. These are moments of profound trust and compassion, shaped one connection at a time.
Champions of Humanity represents more than a branding of our compelling outreach programs. It’s a mindset that encourages us to see individuals as whole beings, not as statistics and diagnoses. We approach gaps in opportunities head-on with solutions grounded in dignity and understanding. Champions of Humanity is an invitation to our shared responsibility to see and serve one another with respect and empathy.
These beliefs have inspired us to explore new models of care. We’ve partnered with local organizations, area farmers, and global innovators like Medtronic to confront chronic conditions in communities often left behind. We’ve made fresh produce available through food pharmacies and mobile markets, and we’ve chosen to invest in programs that support people directly, rather than simply expanding hospital facilities. We’ve even partnered to construct affordable housing in Camden anchored by on-site primary care.
Yet, these efforts cannot fall to healthcare systems alone. Legislators have the power to create environments where people and families can thrive. Businesses can offer fair wages, a workplace that embraces all and meaningful benefits that prioritize employee well-being. Schools and community organizations can foster mentorship, leadership, and opportunities that uplift future generations. And each of us individually can lend our voice, time, and resources to causes that heal and empower.
Being a Champion of Humanity is a choice. It means acting when it's easier to look away, extending empathy in a world that too often asks us to pick sides, and recognizing humanity in every neighbor, coworker, and stranger.
During this time of uncertainty, let’s lead with compassion. Let’s build partnerships that are anchored in mutual respect and common purpose. And let’s remember that when we create conditions where everyone can thrive, we all grow stronger.
This is the story we’re writing at Virtua Health—one filled with hope, humanity, and connection. We all have levers of influence. Why not use them to be champions together?
